How We Made Our Old House Warmer

    July 4, 2021August 1, 2021

Who’s feeling the cold right now? Yes, I know the whole running joke about people in winter in Perth, where it gets to 16 degrees (60 Fahrenheit for those of you overseas) and people start squawking and moaning that they’re freezing to death. To give people overseas an idea, it never snows in Western Australia.

We read this book again tonight – one that our k We read this book again tonight – one that our kids talk about a lot. Dee Kawai Tang @kawa_heart_studio wrote @the_love_is_book after she tragically lost her firstborn daughter Kawa Leaf when she was three. Dee’s husband Desmond Sweeney is the artist behind @8footwalls. While painting helped him with his grief, Dee wrote and illustrated Love Is to help herself heal; to rediscover and remind herself of the tiny things that bring love to life ✨ Designed as a kids book (but secretly for adults) the book is written in simple verse with happy illustrations. It is an easy-to-read curation of some of the sweetest pleasures in life; how the tiny experiences and fleeting moments in life are the things to be cherished most 💛
.
I still remember standing in her sunny back garden studio, Dee telling me she was going to make a book in honour of Kawa. She told me she could envision every detail, right down to how the book would look and feel, like a worn antique book you'd stumble across in a secondhand shop, and I just knew she would make it happen. An amazing kickstarter later, and her book is a reality. When it turned up at our doorstep, I almost cried. It actually arrived at the perfect time, as our kids had just had their own first experience with loss. They were so sad and the book (and the big discussions it provoked about angels) really helped them.

I admire Dee and Desmond so much. I can honestly say that Dee is one of the most beautiful and strong people I know. Despite having gone through the most heartbreaking loss a person could, she is still warm, still makes everyone laugh. To meet her is to love her, and her warmth and love for life comes through in her book. She is brilliant and it’s an honour to have her book in our home 💛😊

Woah my Stories blew up today when I started talki Woah my Stories blew up today when I started talking about kids birthday parties and our present drawer! For about a year or so now, I've kept a drawer of gifts in this old dresser (and wrapping paper and gift bags nearby in another). Now that the kids are in kindy and school they get invites to SO many parties - and I swear June and May have been particularly hectic! 🥳🎉😅 At one point, Mr Nerd and I were like, "Maybe we can just ask them to pick the parties they most want to go to?" 🤔 but apparently that is not how kids operate 😅
.
I had my reservations about starting a present drawer again (you can read my odd reason why in Stories 😆) but now having one seriously saves me SO much time - and money, because buying for multiple parties a weekend can sure add up! Do you have a present drawer? I'm really enjoying the conversation - how you guys budget and organise for birthday parties, and also what you think is an appropriate and sensible spend for kids gifts! 💰 I'll put the Stories and responses in my 'Adulting' tab of my Highlights 😉

.
Also if Nala looks proud, it's because she thrifted this dresser with me a few years ago, we found it on the side of the road going for a walk. We cheap like that✌🏽😎 🐶

I fell in love with a house this week. Went to wri I fell in love with a house this week. Went to write some copy on this little warehouse-style home in North Fremantle for @sarah.bourke_real.estate and didn't want to leave! Look at it! 😍

Many moons ago, before my head grew cluttered with trends and overwhelmed by the noise of Pinterest and Instagram, this is exactly the kind of house I envisioned I would have one day: small and cosy with a loft bedroom, lots of reclaimed timber and recycled materials, exposed brick and soul. I LOVE IT 🖤 It was designed by now-retired architect Tom Roberts, built in 1984 and it has aged so gracefully - to me that material palette is still just as timeless today. It has dual zoning - the front room could be used either as an office OR bedroom. Bonus points for the cute potter's studio in the garden. (And the Stop the Toad sticker 🐸)

If my hunch is correct it will go under offer in roughly two minutes, so go buy it quick haha. Once you're settled in, I'll come over with a bottle of red.

Who knew a cute adult nightlight was the home item Who knew a cute adult nightlight was the home item I never knew I needed? 😊💡 @beaconlighting sent me a lovely little thank you recently. This is their Odette LED Portable light (in Olive) and I love it - the stylish shape, the colour, the way it dresses up the MCM drawers I found on the kerb, and the practicality. A while ago, in an attempt to decrease how much time I spend mindlessly scrolling (a lot 😅) I started keeping my phone OFF my bedside at night, so I wouldn't scroll before sleep and upon waking up. But of course this means missing out on one of the best things about a smart phone - a torch at the ready 🔦 Now I tap the spot on this little touch lamp and carry it around - perfect for checking on the kids when they're asleep, reading a book without keeping Mr Nerd up, or getting up to write a reminder to yourself for that urgent task that *only* comes into your brain as you're about to fall asleep (I know a lot of mums in particular will relate 😅) Will link in Stories!

If the perfect piece of furniture doesn't exist... If the perfect piece of furniture doesn't exist... DIY your own! ✨ I've always wanted to add a drawing/Lego desk to Miss Nerd's room. But typical of lots of 70s houses like ours, her room is little - 2.7m x 2.7m (about 7.3ft) - and those of you with small spaces will understand, every inch counts! 😅 No desk I found would fit or was exactly what I wanted (swipe for the before, a hand-me-down make-do). So I roped in my clever sister @simoneanderson to help the kids and I make one. I know my strengths and weaknesses, and Simone is much handier than me and less likely to chop off a digit 🤘🏽😎
.
We used two pieces of wood from @bunnings affixed together, added brackets to the walls, and Miss Nerd helped me paint it with some paint leftover from a @duluxaus collab (Dulux Edvard) 💙
.
The kids loved their little upgrade. It's a tight fit, but it makes the room more practical.
And gives just enough cosy space for them both; for Little Nerd to produce his wholesome stories, and for Miss Nerd to produce many creepy drawings to come 👹🕷️💀😶
